SUMMARY: A para educator instructs students in an individual or group setting. He/She helps with assigned learning activities and provides assistance to students under the direction of the special education teacher.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide one-on-one instruction/supervision in self-contained classroom as needed.
- Keep student/staff information confidential.
- Provide instructional support to students in accordance with teacher directions.
- Record data on individual student progress in the curriculum and behavior program.
- Assist student(s) with behavior management by consistently following the plan developed by the staff including but not limited to redirecting, teaching replacement behavior and providing reinforcement.
- Work cooperatively with members of the team.
- Develop a rapport with special needs or at-risk students.
- Perform computer tasks that are needed for the program as directed by supervisors.
- Be familiar with special education and district policies and procedures.
- Promote student independence in the school setting.
- Refer concerns for safety, health and discipline to the supervising teacher or principal.
- Perform other tasks as reasonably requested by the teacher or administrators.
- Ability to respond appropriately to aggressive and physical behaviors. Ability to utilize de-escalation techniques.
- Physically capable of lifting a student (must be able to lift 50 pounds). Heavier lifting will utilize a two person lift or assistive devices. Willing and physically capable of kneeling, bending and working or sitting on the floor with students, based on student needs.
- Ability to attend to personal care of students, such as; toileting, lifting, transferring, changing, feeding and providing other services, depending on the needs of the student(s).
- Ability to perform varied tasks in a busy atmosphere.
- Playground and lunchroom supervision.
QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of college credits required or completion of Praxis Exam with a passing score.
