SUBSTITUTE SPECIAL EDUCATION BUS ASSISTANT - Approximately 1.5-3.5 hrs/day - As needed basis
SUMMARY: Performs a variety of tasks related to assisting bus drivers and students in the safe and efficient transportation of special education students to and from school under the direction of the Transportation Supervisor and the Special Education Director. Duties may be performed under stressful situations in all types of weather.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Depending upon the individual assignment, The Bus Assistant may perform all or a combination of the following:
- Supervise students by enforcing safety regulations while riding the bus:
a. Assists in properly securing wheelchairs. b. Properly fasten in seats when required. c. See that each child is seated and stays seated. d. Properly secure students in car seats, when necessary. e. Assists in student management issues. f. Additional safety regulations as applicable.
- Load and unload students, including wheelchair and other mobility assisted students.
- Work cooperatively with parents and school building staff.
- Assist with management of children with special health problems, e.g. seizures, respiratory, etc.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student issues and records.
- Assist in maintaining a healthy, safe, clean bus interior to a high health standard (student body fluids such as saliva, vomit, feces/urine, etc.).
- Wear attire appropriate for the safe performance and physical nature of the responsibilities inherent in this position
(e.g. no skirts, dresses, open toed shoes).
- Assist in the execution of bus evacuation drills.
- Ability to maintain control over student passengers utilizing effective student management techniques, and remain calm in a crisis situation.
- Possess the ability to maintain congenial and positive service-oriented working relationships with students, parents and the public.
- Wear seatbelt while bus is in motion in accordance with state law.
- Perform other duties as required by the Director/Coordinator of Special Education and the Supervisor of Transportation.
- Other duties may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); job related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
