FREEMAN ELEMENTARY/MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNSELOR
NON-CONTINUING - 1.0 FTE Leave Replacement - Monday-Friday - August 11, 2025 thru June 17, 2026
SUMMARY: The counselor, under the supervision of the building principals, will apply his/her expertise in mental health, learning, and behavior to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. She/he will provide assessment, support, and intervention services to students; partner with families, teachers, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments; work with school administrators to improve school-wide policies; and collaborate with community providers to coordinate services for students. This position may include, but not be limited to, the following performance responsibilities, qualifications, knowledge, skills and abilities.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Establishes positive working relationships with students, staff, parents and community groups.
2. Assists in implementing district and building philosophies and goals.
3. Responsible for the development of master schedule and student registration.
4. Provides academic guidance and counseling for students under his/her direction and communicates with parents and teachers concerning academic progress.
5. Collects, organizes, and analyzes information about students through records, tests, interviews, and professional sources, to appraise their interests, aptitudes, abilities, and personality characteristics, for vocational and educational planning.
6. Maintains appropriate student records.
7. Collaborate with the teacher to evaluate pupil progress, records results, and issues reports to inform parents of progress. Provides for individual differences in the learning needs of students.
8. Discusses pupils' academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements with parents.
9. Oversees site and district programs including, but not limited to 504, McKinney Vento, Foster Youth, AVID, & PBIS.
10. Interprets district test scores and provide results to students and parents.
11. Counsels pupils when adjustment and academic problems arise.
12. Compiles and studies occupational, educational, and economic information to aid students in making and carrying out vocational and educational objectives.
13. Assists individuals to understand and overcome social and emotional problems.
14. Promotes the District’s educational and accreditation goals through parent conferences and related activities.
15. Attends meetings as required. Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and counselor training workshops.
16. Maintains and promote own personal professional growth through appropriate workshops, reading of professional materials and participating in professional development opportunities.
17. Engages in research and follow up activities to evaluate counseling techniques.
18. Is knowledgeable of district policies and procedures pertaining to student rights and responsibilities, student records, attendance, and special education programs.
19. Performs other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must possess a ESA certificate with School Counselor endorsement.
• A valid Washington State Teaching Certificate is preferred.
• Must favorably pass the Washington State Patrol/FBI background check.
• Demonstrate mature behavior and ability to use sound judgment in communicating with students, parents, staff, and community.
• Demonstrated success by training/experience which recognizes all children as learners.
• Preference given to quality current references.
• Must submit a complete application packet.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A Bachelor's Degree (BA/BS) is required. A Master’s Degree (MA) or equivalent is preferred. Experience with social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health is preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
ESA certificate with counselor endorsement required. Additional teaching certificate preferred.
Terms of Employment:
This is a 1.0 FTE non-continuing contract beginning August 11, 2025 thru June 17, 2026. Salary is based upon placement on the salary schedule.
